THE END OF STEAM Have you ever wondered what really killed the steam locomotive in America? If so this book is for you! It use's layman's terms to show how the complex interaction of social upheaval, diesel-electric locomotive developments and the thermodynamic limitations of steam power forced the retirement of all steam locomotives on the nation's Class 1 railroads by 1960. The use of simple thermodynamic models, tables and graphs show how steam's inherent limitations prevented this form of power from adapting to a rapidly changing America after World War II. Its conclusions firmly place the end of steam's usefulness in the context of history. This book is a must for any reader who wants to understand the fundamental forces that drove the changeover from steam to diesel. Click here for a book review by William L. Withuhn of the Smithsonian Institute. This book review appeared in the National Railway Historical Society's "Railroad History" magazine. SKINNER VERTICAL UNIVERSAL UNAFLOW ENGINE SALES BOOKLET After all these years we still have 10 copies of Skinner's vertical unaflow steam engine sales booklet. These are original copies, not reprints! They are left over from the days when we represented Skinner on the West Coast. Skinner declared bankruptcy and was liquidated in March, 2003. So these booklets are truly a part of history now. And what a history! Skinner was the world's premier reciprocating steam power engineering organization. They pushed the traditional reciprocating steam engine farther than anyone and the vertical universal unaflow steam engine was the best and last evolution of their long line of unaflow steam engines. These engines were built in quantity right up through the 1950's and early 1960's. The last new engine was sold by William Petitjean and delivered in 1983. This booklet is very detailed and contains many excellent illustrations including a centerpiece, annotated cross section view of a vertical unaflow engine. It explains the unaflow principle of operation, describes the outstanding Skinner rotary cam valve gear and steam tight poppet valve, reviews design and construction features, and shows some novel applications of these famous engines. When these original booklets are gone we will offer high quality reprints. But, the first ten buyers will get the originals in mint condition! These are a must for anyone seriously interested in a collector's item that describes the best of the best in reciprocating steam power! THE LSB FEEDWATER CONTROL PROGRAM This guide book is built around the outstanding performance of TERLYN's LSB8000 and LSB4000 single dose boiler feedwater treatments. It is written for the lay person. It contains 16 pages of principles and practical application suggestions for any full size boiler operator who wishes to establish his own boiler feedwater treatment program using LSB products. Tables, a graph and drawing illustrate important features of the program. Operation and interpretation of the recommended Hanna Combo Meter is also discussed in the IMPLEMENTATION section. Click here to see a pdf file of the Introduction, Objectives and Scope of this guide booklet. Although this book is not intended for Live Steamers, it still provides good information to help Live Steamers maintain their boilers in a clean, scale free condition. See the LSB Treatment page for more information MODERN LUBRICATION FOR RECIPROCATING STEAM ENGINES This is one of the old booklets salvaged by Bill Petitjean when he was at Skinner Engine Company in the early 1980's. It has an excellent description of how Tide Water developed vacuum distilled, solvent refined steam cylinder and bearing oils. These two processes represent the birth of modern sludge free lubricants that resist oxidation and thermal breakdown. The booklet is beautifully illustrated and has color sectional views of a hydrostatic lubricator, a mechanical lubricator and an atomizing quill in a steam pipe. It also reviews the development of the stationary reciprocating steam engine up to the most modern unaflow types. It has more beautiful color sectional views of an Ames Unaflow engine, a full centerpiece color sectional view of a Skinner Horizontal Universal Unaflow engine and a color sectional view of a small Troy-Engberg vertical piston valve engine. The selection of cylinder oils and bearing oils for stationary and marine engines is carefully discussed. Although Tyco oils have not been available for many years the information is generic and still applies to traditional reciprocating steam engines of all types. Most importantly this booklet shows the the great care and expense put into early sales booklets. Tide Water spared no expense when putting this booklet together and it represents the best of marketing literature for steam engine oils in an age when steam was the primary moving force in America. It is a must for any serious steam engine operator or model maker. |
